Rumi's Masnavi

One of the world's most loved poems runs to six books.

Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, composed in Persian in the 13th century, teaches spiritual lessons through stories — beginning with a reed flute that longs for the reed bed it was cut from.

Why it matters: Iqbal regarded Rumi as his spiritual guide, and the Masnavi is still studied across the region.

Shah Jo Risalo

Sindh's greatest poet made ordinary women the heroes of his verse.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai's Shah Jo Risalo retells Sindhi folk tales such as Sassui Punhun and Umar Marvi, in which heroines like Sassui and Marvi show courage and devotion.

Why it matters: His verses are still sung every year at his shrine in Bhit Shah.

Ghalib edits Ghalib

Ghalib published only a selection of what he wrote.

Mirza Ghalib wrote far more Urdu verse than he kept; he chose and edited his own Diwan, first printed in 1841. Its ghazals pack whole philosophies into two lines.

Why it matters: Editing is part of creating — what you leave out sharpens what remains.

Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa

Iqbal wrote a complaint to God — and then God's reply.

Allama Iqbal recited Shikwa in 1909, a bold lament on the decline of the Muslim world. In Jawab-e-Shikwa (1913) he answered it, urging self-reform and action instead of blame.

Why it matters: Honest complaint should lead to honest self-examination.

Shikwa (1909) and Jawab-e-Shikwa (1913), collected in Bang-e-Dra (1924)
